Rural Development Mission in India

Rurban Mission :



  • The Telangana stood first in the implementation of the Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission (SPMRM) that was launched to stimulate local economic development , enhance basic services and create well planned clusters.
  • Tamilnadu and Gujarat took the second and thord positions.
  • Mission launched in 2006
  • Schemes was implemented by Union Ministry of Rural Development
  • Scheme purpose -To provide urban facilities or amenities in rural areas 
  • It acheives 300 rurban clusters 
  • Enables cluster -based development with a "rural soul and urban amenities"
           *Rurban cluster:  A cluster of villages sharing boundary with each other.Cluster will have                                                 a population of around 25000 to 50000 in plan and coastal areas and a                                                       population of around 5000 to15000 in desert, hilly or tribal areas.
  • Funding: Centrally sponsored Scheme with two fund streams.
            70% through Convergence with various central +state schems +private investment.                                  30% through Critical Gap Funds(CGF)
  • Clusters are identified by state governments based on the framework prepared by Ministry of Rural Development
  • Expected outcomes:
           *To bridge the rural-urban divide-economically ,technologically and those related to facilities                   and services.
           * Spreading development in the region
           *Attracting investments in the rural areas
           *Stimulating local economic developmemt with emphasis on reduction of poverty and                               unemployment in the rural areas.
